I picked this gem up out of the sale bin at my local grocery store. The title just called to me; I have an eight year old boy so it was kind of a no-brainer. The surprising thing was that I actually enjoyed it as much as my son did, and I am, by most counts, an adult.
As a parent I find myself suffering through some flat, nonsensical, pointless stories written for children. This book, however, was fresh, original, and just plain fun. From the first sentence "Long, long ago in the Kingdom of Armpit, a small realm north of the Dominion of Elbow, there lived a young prince named Harry." I was hooked, amused and touched.
The story follows the adventures of Prince Harry as he travels with the brave knight Sir Fartsalot on his quest to discover what evil lurks behind the “Foul West Wind”. Harry, who is a bit of a prankster, convinces “Sir Farty” that the evil he is searching for may in fact be a “frightful, terrible, monstrosity….the Booger”. Their quest takes them into the forest of “Knockon Wood”, where they meet up with a mysterious Dark Knight, battle a dragon, and rescue - then escape from - a gaggle of princesses.
Bolger uses every basic ingredient to be found in a traditional fairy tale, but mixes them up with witty, clever dialog, smart, creative plot direction, and a dash of pure magic. The end result is a very funny non-traditional fairy tale that is engaging for kids and adults.
I’m very glad to have found this treasure and I am looking forward to many more exciting adventures with Sir Farty.
From an early age Anne’s nose became stuck in book, and now after countless books and a few years we won’t count—has happily not found its way back out.
